The Golden State Warriors are considering trading Latvian centre Kristaps Porziņģis, whose future in professional basketball is becoming increasingly uncertain, ESPN reports, citing sources within the National Basketball Association (NBA).
ESPN insider Shams Charania, also citing unnamed sources, wrote on social media platform X that if there is no significant breakthrough in Porziņģis’ recovery, the Latvian basketball star may not continue his professional career.
The Warriors subsequently announced that they would not comment on media reports concerning potential trade discussions.
Meanwhile, basketball journalist Evan Sidery reported on X that the Warriors had contacted the Milwaukee Bucks about a potential trade involving Myles Turner. Porziņģis could be among the players included in the proposed deal.
Porziņģis has been dealing with health problems and did not participate in the team’s training camp in Hawaii or any preseason games. He will also be unavailable for the start of the regular season.
Last week, the Latvian basketball player visited the team’s training facility and met with club management,
although no further details about his health condition were disclosed.
Although the Warriors stated that Porziņģis would remain around the team without participating in practices, ESPN reports that he has once again been absent from the team’s training facility.
The club has said it will provide updates on his return to practice and competitive games when appropriate.
At the end of June, Porziņģis agreed to a two-year, 40 million dollar contract extension with the Warriors. However, only 3 million dollars are guaranteed in the second season of the agreement.
While still playing for the Boston Celtics, Porziņģis said he had been diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a condition that can cause severe fatigue and dizziness if left untreated.
The Golden State Warriors are scheduled to play their first regular-season game on Wednesday.
