Mārtiņš Bilzēns is the only survivor among four Latvian climbers involved in a tragic accident during an expedition on Denali, North America’s highest peak, in Alaska. After surviving a fall of approximately 300 metres and spending more than ten hours in freezing conditions awaiting rescue, he was airlifted in critical condition to a hospital in Anchorage. Due to the extremely high cost of medical treatment, his family has turned to Ziedot.lv for public support.
Mārtiņš remains in the intensive care unit of a hospital in Anchorage under constant medical supervision. While his condition has stabilized, it remains extremely serious. His recovery now depends on continued medical care, while his family faces significant emotional, practical, and financial challenges.
According to Ziedot.lv, the immediate priority is ensuring that Mārtiņš receives all necessary treatment and can eventually be safely transported back to Latvia, where further medical care and rehabilitation can continue.
His insurance coverage is expected to be exhausted within the coming days. Medical treatment costs in a U.S. hospital can reach tens of thousands of dollars per week, and doctors expect that he may need to remain hospitalized for several months.
Additional funds will be required for medical transportation to Latvia, continued treatment, rehabilitation,
medications, and specialized medical supplies needed throughout the recovery process.
The total amount of assistance required will depend on medical assessments, the course of treatment, the extent of insurance coverage, and the eventual rehabilitation plan. However, it is already clear that Mārtiņš faces a long and complex recovery that will require substantial financial resources.
Family members currently at his bedside said: “Mārtiņš’s condition is stable but very serious. The first critical stage has now been overcome, and several operations have been performed so that doctors can begin treating the injuries sustained in the fall and help him slowly begin the road to recovery. Although Mārtiņš is strong, he continues to fight every day, and the treatment and rehabilitation process will take a very long time.
We, Mārtiņš’s family, are grateful for every message of support and every good wish sent his way. We also extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the climbers who lost their lives in this tragedy.”
The family has appealed for public support: “We ask everyone to help Mārtiņš return to life. Each of us strives to achieve something in life; only the methods differ. Together with his companions, Mārtiņš sought to reach the summit of Denali, but the tragic fall changed everything. Now he faces a different goal—to recover, return home, and one day tell us all what happened in Alaska.”
