Orange warning declared in Latvia due to strong wind

Strong north-west wind is expected in Latvia this Monday, 17 January. Wind speed will reach 26-31 m/sec along the coast in the country, as warned by Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
On Monday, 17 January, weather in Latvia will be dictated by a wide cyclone, which will be located above Estonia and will continue moving further down south-east. The sky will be cloudy. Some areas will experience wet snow and snow. The layer of snow in some areas will increase by 5-8 cm.
The wind will gradually change direction to the west and north-west. In many parts of Latvia wind speed will reach 20-24 m/sec (26-31 m/sec along the coast).
During the day the sky will clear up at times. By the evening clouds will have dispersed in most of the country’s territory.
The wind will cause an increase of water levels along the southern shores of the Gulf of Riga.
Air temperature will remain at -2° C… +3° C. Air temperature in eastern territories will drop below that by a couple of degrees.
Drivers are urged to be careful because snowing may be intense and reduce visibility. There is also the risk of a blizzard.
The storm may tear down trees and blow away unfastened objects, carrying them in the air and causing damages to the surrounding environment.
Power outages are possible as well!
On Tuesday, 18 January, cyclone influence will reduce and daytime weather will be dictated by a high atmospheric pressure area from the south-west. At night the wind will be strong to moderately strong with speed remaining at 15-19 m/sec (20-23 m/sec). Around the afternoon the wind will draw in from the west and south-west and will gradually calm down.
More snowing is expected at night. During the day, as atmospheric pressure increases, the sky will clear up in many parts of Latvia and no major precipitation is expected. At night minimal air temperature will be around +1° C… -4° C (-4° C… -7° C in eastern territories). Maximum air temperature in western territories will not go above 0° C… +3° C. Further in the east, however, air temperature will not go higher than 0° C… -5° C.
On Wednesday atmospheric pressure will gradually start decreasing and a new cyclone will approach Latvia from the north. Clouds will increase but precipitation will remain local – some rain in the west and snow in the east. The south-west wind will be moderate to moderately strong. In Kurzeme wind speed will reach 15-18 m/sec.
Air temperature at night will start off with 0° C… -5° C in western areas and will drop as far as -5° C in eastern territories. However, warmer masses of air will flow to Latvia, reaching a temperature of +1° C… +5° C during the day.
According to current forecasts, another cyclone will pass through Latvia from the north in the second half of the week.
On Thursday and the night to Friday northern wind speed will reach 20-22 m/sec, but will calm down by the end of the week.
The volume of precipitation will increase slightly – with colder masses of air flowing to the country and air temperature dropping below 0° C, snowing is expected in most of the country. Some areas may experience blizzards.
Atmospheric pressure will increase on the weekend. Precipitation will calm down, the sky will become clear and the wind will calm down.
