Latvia warns of possible airspace threat in Latgale for the third consecutive day

The Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) and the Ministry of Defence announced that a possible airspace threat was detected on Thursday at 10:45 a.m. in the municipalities of Ludza, Rēzekne, and Krāslava.

In accordance with security procedures, fighter jets participating in NATO’s Baltic air policing mission were involved in assessing the situation.

The NBS emphasized that Latvian forces, together with NATO allies, continuously monitor the airspace in order to respond оперативно to potential threats when necessary. At the same time,

air defense capabilities along the eastern border had already been strengthened

earlier through the deployment of additional units.

As previously reported by BNN, the Crisis Management Centre had earlier explained that in the event of an airspace threat, automatic evacuation of people from public buildings is not necessary.

The most important action in such situations is to move as quickly as possible to a safer place inside the building rather than going outside. Residents are urged to follow the so-called “two-wall principle” — staying in a location separated from the outside environment by at least two walls.

Authorities also recommend closing windows and doors, staying away from windows, glass surfaces, and exterior walls, and following instructions issued by the responsible services.
