Warning of airspace threat issued in Latvia’s Latgale region for second day in a row

The Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS) have announced a possible threat in Latvian airspace starting from 9:17 a.m. in the currently designated municipalities of Ludza, Rēzekne, and Krāslava.

Fighter jets participating in NATO’s Baltic air policing mission have been activated.

Together with NATO allies, the National Armed Forces continuously monitor the airspace to ensure the ability to respond immediately to potential threats. The NBS has strengthened air defense capabilities along the eastern border by deploying additional units.

As long as Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues, repeated incidents involving foreign unmanned aerial vehicles entering or approaching Latvian airspace remain possible.

It should be noted that on Tuesday, the 19th of May, two separate warnings about airspace threats were issued during the day — one in the morning and another in the evening. As a result, train services were canceled, and 9th grade students in several municipalities of Latgale had their Latvian language examination interrupted.
