Russia is lying about alleged Ukrainian strikes against Russia being launched from Latvia, Latvia’s top officials emphasized on social media.
President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated that Russia is falsely claiming that Latvia allows any country to use Latvian airspace and territory to carry out attacks against Russia or any other state.
Outgoing Prime Minister Evika Siliņa explained that Russia is conducting yet another disinformation campaign against Latvia by spreading false claims that Ukraine plans to use Latvia as a base for attacks on Russian territory.
“Latvia has never granted Ukraine permission to use its territory or airspace for self-defense strikes against Russia or any other country,” the Prime Minister stressed, emphasizing that Russia is the aggressor and that Ukraine has every right to defend itself.
Foreign Minister Baiba Braže also stressed that Russia is once again lying,
adding that the Foreign Intelligence Service is carrying out a disinformation campaign against Latvia.
“Fact: Latvia does not provide airspace for attacks against Russia. This has been explained repeatedly to Russian representatives,” the minister emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Latvian Ministry of Defence stated that Latvia is not involved in planning or carrying out Ukrainian counterattacks against Russia. The Baltic states support Ukraine by supplying military equipment, humanitarian aid, and financial assistance, while also emphasizing Ukraine’s legitimate right to defend itself against Russia’s full-scale invasion.
As previously reported by LETA, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed that
Ukraine was preparing strikes against Russia’s rear regions from the territory of the Baltic states
and that Ukrainian soldiers had allegedly already been deployed to Latvia.
The SVR further claimed that the Ukrainian authorities had supposedly succeeded in persuading Riga to approve operations against Russia and that personnel from Ukraine’s drone forces had already been sent to Latvia.
The SVR named five Latvian military bases — Ādaži, Sēlija, Lielvārde, Daugavpils, and Jēkabpils — where Ukrainian soldiers were allegedly stationed.
The SVR also threatened Latvia with “just retribution,” claiming that NATO membership would not protect the country.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi confirmed on Tuesday via the platform X that
the SVR’s claims were false, describing them as a continuation of Moscow’s propaganda campaign.
“There is not a single grain of truth in Moscow’s latest false statements accusing Ukraine of preparing attacks against Russia from Latvian territory. We officially reject them,” the ministry representative stated.
“Ukraine does not use Latvian territory or airspace for operations against Russia and does not plan to do so,” Tykhyi emphasized.
The SVR’s claims are part of a “broader propaganda campaign” aimed at destabilizing public opinion in Latvia and the Baltic states, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson concluded.
