Bank of Latvia President warns against delays in forming government

A new government in Latvia must be formed as quickly as possible, while at the same time focusing on the most important economic tasks that need to be completed before the next elections, Mārtiņš Kazāks, President of the Bank of Latvia, told journalists after meeting with prime ministerial candidate Andris Kulbergs of United List (AS).

Commenting on the potential new coalition, Kazāks stressed that two aspects are particularly important.

“The sooner a functioning government is formed, the better. There is no need for delays,” he emphasized.

At the same time, the President of the Bank of Latvia highlighted that several important economic tasks still need to be completed before the next elections, underlining the need to focus on the highest priorities.

He also stressed that the current economic situation requires clear action

and concentration on the most important measures in the coming months that could influence the country’s economic development.

As previously reported, the government led by Evika Siliņa of New Unity (JV) collapsed at the beginning of May, and President Edgars Rinkēvičs entrusted AS politician Kulbergs with forming a new government, giving political parties slightly more than a week for negotiations.
