Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has decided to resign, the LETA news agency has learned.
As previously reported, coalition partner Progressives on Wednesday called on President Edgars Rinkēvičs to begin consultations on the formation of a new government.
The Progressives stated that the government had effectively lost its ability to function and argued that under such circumstances there were only two possible options — the resignation of the Prime Minister or a vote in the Saeima on the government’s continued mandate.
However, following a meeting with the Progressives on Wednesday, Siliņa said she had offered them the opportunity to continue cooperation within the coalition.
VARIOUS DISAGREEMENTS HAD LONG EXISTED BETWEEN THE COALITION PARTNERS, ALTHOUGH UNTIL NOW THEY HAD MANAGED TO AGREE ON CONTINUING THEIR WORK TOGETHER.
President Rinkēvičs plans to meet on Friday with representatives of all parliamentary factions to consult on the current political situation.
According to the President, despite the fact that only five months remain until the next parliamentary elections, Latvia still needs a functioning government capable of making decisions and maintaining support in the Saeima.
