Demographic crisis deepens in Latvia: deaths significantly exceed births

In the first two months of this year, 1,761 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 0.6% (or 10 births) fewer than in the same period of 2025, according to provisional data published by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia.

Of the newborns registered in the first two months of 2026, 875 were boys, which is 4.9% (45) fewer than in the corresponding period of 2025, while 886 were girls, representing an increase of 4.1% (35).

In February alone, 810 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 9% (80 births) fewer than in February 2025. This included 407 boys and 403 girls.

At the same time, 4,957 deaths were registered in Latvia during the first two months of 2026,

which is 9.2% (419) more than in the same period of 2025, when 4,538 deaths were recorded.

As a result, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 3,196 in the first two months of this year, compared to a difference of 2,767 in the same period last year.

During the same period, 742 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 20.5% (191 marriages) fewer than in the corresponding period of 2025.

As of the 1st of March this year, Latvia’s provisional population stood at 1.818 million.
