Latvian President allows Braže to publicly wear Ukrainian State award

The President of Latvia has granted permission to Foreign Minister Baiba Braže (New Unity) to publicly wear the Ukrainian state award she received in November last year—the Order of Merit, Second Class—according to a publication in the official gazette Latvijas Vēstnesis.

The President has also allowed Māris Grudulis, Honorary Consul of Monaco in Latvia, to publicly wear the Monaco state award he received last November—the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Grimaldi.

The Law on State Awards stipulates that individuals who have received awards from other countries may accept them, but may publicly wear them only with the permission of the President of Latvia. At the same time,

such permission is not required for individuals who have received a foreign award during a state visit,

or for members of the National Armed Forces who received a foreign award while on active service.

A person who has received a foreign state award and wishes to wear it publicly must personally notify the Chapter of Orders.
