Snow and frost down to –15°C expected in Latvia

On Thursday, the sky will be overcast, bringing snow to most of the country during the night and mainly to the southeast during the day, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

The snow cover will increase by 1–3 cm, and in southeastern regions by as much as 5–7 cm. Local black ice is also possible. A light to moderate easterly wind will blow. Minimum air temperatures at night will range between –5°C and –10°C, and in the southeast between –2°C and –5°C. Daytime maximum temperatures will also remain below zero, between –1°C and –6°C.

On Friday and Saturday, thick cloud cover will persist, bringing snow and, in the southeast, possible black ice. In many places, the snow cover will increase by 5–9 cm. A light to moderate northeasterly to northerly wind will blow, with gusts reaching 15–17 m/s, which at times during snowfall may reduce visibility to 500–1,000 meters. Air temperatures will remain between –5°C and –10°C, although in some parts of Latgale a brief thaw is expected, with daytime temperatures hovering around 0°C.

On Sunday and at the beginning of next week, air temperatures will once again be below zero throughout the country, and at night in some places temperatures may drop to –15°C or lower. Skies will be mostly cloudy, with precipitation expected only on Sunday.
