Frost down to –30°C: the start of the week in Latvia will be especially cold

In the first half of the week, the weather will remain not only cold but also dry. Under the influence of colder air masses, nighttime temperatures across much of the country will drop to –20°C or even lower, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

The night into Monday, as well as the morning hours, will be particularly cold, with thermometers in many areas falling to –22…–27°C, and in some places in the south of the country reaching as low as –30°C. There is a possibility that new minimum air temperature records for 2 February could be set.

During the daytime, however, air temperatures will mostly not exceed –9…–14°C.

Both Monday and Tuesday will remain mostly sunny, but by midweek cloud cover will gradually increase.

In the second half of the week, the influence of a cyclone from the southwest will intensify, bringing an inflow of warmer air and increased precipitation. At night, temperatures will not drop below –15°C, and daytime frost will also ease; however, the likelihood of a thaw toward the end of next week remains low.
