Anticyclone brings record-breaking cold to Latvia: nighttime temperatures down to –30°C

Under the influence of an anticyclone, atmospheric pressure will rise and skies will clear on Friday, meaning no precipitation is expected, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

A light to moderate northeasterly to easterly wind will blow. At night, air temperatures will drop to –15…–19°C, with severe frost of –20…–24°C expected across much of Latvia. The night will be relatively milder in northern Kurzeme, where minimum temperatures are forecast to range between –9 and –14°C. During the day, sunshine will allow temperatures to rise to –10…–15°C, while northern Kurzeme will be slightly warmer at –5…–10°C.

Sunny and dry weather will continue on Saturday and Sunday, although clouds will occasionally cover the sky. The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre notes that a light easterly wind will prevail, strengthening to moderate in Kurzeme. Nighttime minimum temperatures will reach –20…–24°C, while in northern Kurzeme and along much of the coast they will be –14…–19°C, with slightly warmer conditions along the Gulf of Riga coast in Kurzeme.

As skies clear, air temperatures in some central and eastern regions may fall to –25…–28°C.

During the day, temperatures will rise, but in parts of southern Latvia the thermometer may still hover around –20°C.

In the first half of next week, cloud cover will increase, though conditions will remain dry. The night into Monday is expected to be particularly cold, with temperatures in some places dropping as low as –30°C. Later in the week, although air temperatures will gradually rise, nighttime minimums in some areas will still range between –20 and –24°C. A light to moderate easterly to northeasterly wind will blow, with gusts in Kurzeme strengthening to up to 15 m/s.
