On Wednesday skies will partly clear at times and sunshine will break through in some areas. No significant precipitation is expected overnight, but later in the afternoon a precipitation zone will reach western Latvia, bringing snow to the southwestern regions, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
During the day, a south-easterly to southerly wind will strengthen and become gusty, reaching 15–18 m/s in Kurzeme. Daytime conditions will remain cold, with maximum air temperatures not exceeding –4°C to –9°C.
On Thursday, skies will occasionally clear in eastern parts of the country, while snow is expected mainly in western and central regions, where the snow cover will increase by 2–4 cm. A light to moderate south-easterly to southerly wind will blow, becoming moderately strong along the coast during the first half of the night, with gusts of 15–18 m/s. In some coastal areas, blowing snow is also possible overnight. Marked temperature contrasts are expected at night: the mildest air will be in Kurzeme, where temperatures will fall to –5°C to –10°C, while
farther east temperatures will gradually drop, reaching –17°C to –19°C in eastern regions.
During the day, air temperatures will rise to +1°C to –4°C in western regions, –5°C to –10°C in central Latvia, and –10°C to –15°C in the east.
On Friday, mostly dry weather is expected, with a light to moderate south-easterly to easterly wind. Night-time temperatures will fall to –8°C to –13°C, –3°C to –8°C in Kurzeme, and as low as –20°C in the south-east. During the day, temperatures will rise from –2°C to –7°C in western parts of the country to –14°C to –17°C in eastern regions.
Over the weekend and into early next week, a high-pressure system will strengthen over Eastern Europe, maintaining dry and wintery cold conditions in Latvia, accompanied by moderate winds. Skies will clear more frequently, and at night temperatures in eastern Latvia will often hover around –15°C or even drop below that mark.
