Newborn in Poland born with 1.62 promille blood alcohol level

A shocking incident occurred on Thursday, the 8th of January, at a hospital in Tomaszów Lubelski, according to sledst.org. A 38-year-old pregnant woman was admitted to the maternity ward in a state of severe alcohol intoxication.

Doctors found that the woman had nearly three promille of alcohol in her blood and therefore decided to perform an emergency Caesarean section. At the time, she was in the 37th or 38th week of pregnancy, meaning the baby was full term.

The child was born alive, but also intoxicated.

Tests revealed a blood alcohol level of 1.62 promille in the newborn. Such a condition can be life-threatening for an infant. Fortunately, according to police, doctors did everything possible to save the child and managed to stabilise the baby’s critical condition. The child’s gender has not been disclosed.

The public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation on suspicion of endangering the child’s life or causing serious bodily harm. Under Polish law, this offence carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years.
