Snow, gusty winds and cold: Latvia’s weekend weather forecast

Weather conditions over the weekend will be influenced by a cyclone over Eastern Europe. Friday will be mostly cloudy, although skies may clear in parts of Kurzeme during the day. A light to moderate northeasterly to easterly wind will blow, strengthening from the second half of the night along the coast and in eastern regions, with gusts reaching 15–19 m/s, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Snow is expected in the far southeastern part of the country in the evening. Night-time air temperatures will drop to –10 to –15°C, while in Kurzeme it will be slightly milder at –5 to –10°C. During the day, maximum temperatures across most of Latvia will range between –8 and –11°C, with somewhat warmer conditions in Kurzeme.

The weekend will be mostly cloudy, though skies will clear at times in some areas. On Saturday, snow is expected in southeastern Latvia, while on Sunday snowfall will spread across much of the country.

Winds will be moderate to moderately strong from the northeast and north,

shifting to northerly and northwesterly directions on Sunday, meteorologists report.

On Saturday night, strong gusts of 15–19 m/s are expected across the entire country, while during the day such gusts will mainly affect coastal areas. On Sunday, strong winds will persist only along the coast and will gradually weaken during the day. Both minimum and maximum temperatures will generally range from –5 to –10°C. Coastal areas will again be a few degrees warmer, while in eastern Latvia temperatures may fall to –11 to –12°C.

Forecasters note that at the beginning of next week the influence of an anticyclone will strengthen, bringing less precipitation, with snow occurring only in isolated places. As colder air moves in, temperatures will continue to drop during the week. By midweek, thermometers in many parts of Latvia will fall below –10°C, and in some areas temperatures could plunge as low as –20°C.
