Thaw on the coast, frost in the east — weather forecast for Friday and the weekend

On Friday the skies will be overcast, and clouds will bring precipitation in places — rain, and in the east also wet snow and freezing rain. In Vidzeme, strong ice formation is expected in the morning and early afternoon, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

A light to moderate, and on the coast moderately strong, southwest to south wind will blow, reaching 15–17 m/s in gusts. During the night, air temperatures will drop to –1…–6°C, while warmer air will remain along the Kurzeme coast, where the minimum temperature will be between –1 and +3°C. During the day, temperatures will rise to 0…+4°C, and in many coastal areas even to +4…+7°C.

Saturday will be mostly cloudy, though in some eastern areas the skies will clear during the day. Overnight, rain and wet snow are expected in many places.

Starting in the morning, a precipitation zone will move across the country from the west — widespread rain, wet snow, and in some places freezing rain are expected. Roads will be slippery in some areas! A light to moderate south to southwest wind will blow; on the coast it will be gusty, reaching 15–18 m/s. The minimum night-time temperature will be between 0 and +4°C, while in the eastern regions it will be below zero. Daytime temperatures will be similar to the previous day, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre reports.

Although Sunday will be mostly cloudy, the sun will appear in some places.

Overnight, precipitation is expected in some areas — rain, and in the east wet snow and locally freezing rain. The day is expected to be without significant precipitation. Ice formation will occur on some road sections! A light to moderate south to southeast wind will blow.

Overnight, temperatures will drop to –1…+3°C, and along the Kurzeme coast it will be warmer at +3…+6°C. During the day, maximum temperatures will be in the same range as on Friday and Saturday.

At the beginning of next week, with a strengthening anticyclone, the weather will become drier and warmer — only occasional light precipitation is expected, and air temperatures will mainly remain above zero, dropping to around –1°C only during night-time hours in some places.
