Weather in Latvia to turn more winter-like: frost and snowflakes possible over the weekend

Wednesday is expected to be mostly cloudy. Light rain or drizzle will occur in some areas during the night, but no significant precipitation is expected during the day, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

During the night and early morning, with light winds blowing, fog will form in some regions, reducing visibility. Throughout the day, the southerly wind will gradually strengthen, reaching gusts of up to 14 m/s along the coast in the evening. Air temperatures will drop to –1…+4°C at night, and along the coast slightly warmer — +4…+6°C. During the day, temperatures will rise to +4…+8°C, and in Kurzeme even up to +9…+10°C.

On Thursday, skies will remain cloudy as new precipitation zones move across Latvia, bringing rain mainly to the northwestern regions from midnight onward. Fog may again form in some areas during the night. A light to moderate south and southwest wind will blow, becoming moderate to rather strong along the coast, where gusts may reach 15–19 m/s. Nighttime temperatures will drop to +2…+7°C, a bit warmer near the sea. During the day, air temperatures will gradually rise to +7…+11°C.

Friday will also be mostly cloudy, though skies will gradually clear from the northwest in the evening.

Rain is expected in many places. A light to moderate south and southwest wind will prevail, stronger along the coast — moderate to rather strong, with gusts up to 15–18 m/s. Overnight, the wind will gradually shift to the west and northwest and ease. Temperatures will fall to +3…+8°C at night, and in some northern regions to +1…+3°C, while during the day they will reach +5…+10°C.

Over the weekend, nights will be considerably colder, with the thermometer in many places approaching –2…–3°C. Even during the daytime, air temperatures will not exceed +7°C. As precipitation is also expected at the end of the week, it should be noted that rain may mix with snow in parts of the country, briefly creating a thin snow cover. Icy road conditions may develop in some areas.

At the beginning of next week, weather will continue to be influenced by a cyclone, bringing mostly cloudy skies and intermittent rain or sleet across much of Latvia. Nighttime temperatures will often drop below zero, while daytime readings will not exceed +6°C.
