In the first eight months of 2025, 7,837 newborns were registered in Latvia — 11.3% fewer, or about 1,000 fewer babies, than in the same period of 2024, according to provisional data published by the Central Statistical Bureau.
Of these newborns, 4,083 were boys, which is a 5.5% decrease (238 fewer) compared to the same period last year, and 3,754 were girls, marking a 16.9% drop (762 fewer) from 2024.
In August 2025, a total of 1,074 babies were registered in Latvia — 7% fewer (81 fewer infants) than in August 2024. This included 547 boys and 527 girls.
During the same eight-month period, 17,221 deaths were registered — 3.2% fewer (563 fewer) than in the corresponding period of 2024, when 17,784 deaths were recorded.
As a result, in the first eight months of 2025, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 9,384, compared to an excess of 8,947 deaths over births during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, 7,733 marriages were registered in Latvia during the first eight months of 2025 — an increase of 8.7% (616 more marriages) compared to the same period in 2024.
As of the 1st of September, 2025, Latvia’s provisional population was 1.829 million.
