Former tax authority officials charged with embezzling secret funds

The Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges against two former officials of the State Revenue Service’s (VID) Tax and Customs Police Department for embezzling several thousand euros that were allocated for classified operational purposes.

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) initiated the prosecution, and the two former state officials have now been charged with forging documents and using falsified documents for personal gain.

In addition, one of the officials is accused of embezzlement, while the other is charged with minor embezzlement.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed to the LETA news agency that charges have been filed but declined to comment on the specific sums involved or other details of the case.

According to evidence gathered during the KNAB’s pre-trial investigation, the two former senior inspectors of the VID allegedly forged and used falsified official documents on multiple occasions in 2022 and 2023 while conducting operational activities.

These

documents, classified as state secrets, granted them access to special financial resources,

which the suspects then appropriated in various amounts and used for unauthorized purposes.

KNAB explained that under the Law on Operational Activities and related regulations, special financial resources are state budget funds allocated to operational entities exclusively for conducting investigative activities — for instance, covert operations or the purchase and maintenance of technical equipment.

The use and amount of these funds are not publicly disclosed, as they are linked to state secrets and the confidential nature of operational work.

Meanwhile, under draft amendments to the Law on the Tax and Customs Police, prepared by the Ministry of Finance (FM) and submitted for approval, the Tax and Customs Police are proposed to be placed under the authority of the Minister of the Interior as of the 1st of January, 2026.
