Latvia’s Armed Forces are becoming more capable and smarter every day, said the new Commander of the National Guard, Aivars Krjukovs, in an interview with LTV’s Morning Panorama on Friday.
According to Krjukovs, the overall security situation in the country is stable, although tensions created externally through migration pressures are still visible at the border.
The National Guard commander noted that Latvia’s Armed Forces are learning many lessons from Ukraine’s grim experience in fighting Russia’s invasion.
Asked about his goals in office, Krjukovs said he would focus on developing personnel planning, enhancing mobility, and improving technological equipment.
At present, the National Guard has about 10,000 members, but the target is to grow into a 20,000-strong organization, which is largely responsible for training personnel in the field of defense.
Krjukovs added that not everyone has to be a guardsman, but at the very least they can be supporters of the National Guard, with broader or narrower involvement.
