At the invitation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity) has traveled to Ukraine today for a working visit.
According to the State Chancellery, Siliņa took part in the Statehood Day ceremony in Ukraine.
The Prime Minister stated it was an honor to attend the award ceremony for Ukrainian heroes, where the families of fallen soldiers who had defended Ukraine’s freedom were also honored.
“It was deeply painful to witness a wife, with a child in her arms, receiving the award her husband had earned—because he was killed by Russian aggression while defending his family and his country,” said Siliņa.
She expressed that
during the ceremony she truly saw what it means to be Ukrainian, and how bravely men, women, and young people are defending their land
—both on the front lines and behind them.
In Kyiv, the Prime Minister also met with US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg, discussing support for Ukraine and emphasizing the importance of not growing weary in this war.
They also discussed the latest US sanctions package, with Siliņa highlighting: “It is being coordinated with the European Union, and it would deliver a powerful blow not only to Russia but also to the countries that support it.”
Ukraine’s Statehood Day was celebrated for the first time in 2022. It marks the Christianization of Kyivan Rus in 988, which is considered the symbolic beginning of Ukrainian statehood.
