Thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds – Latvia issues warning for dangerous weather conditions

Rain is expected in many parts of the country overnight, with heavy showers in some regions and even very heavy rainfall expected in the southern parts of the country, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Thunderstorms with sudden gusts of wind and hail are also possible. Short-term showers may occur in some areas until the afternoon, while in the evening a precipitation zone will cross Latvia, bringing very heavy thunderstorm showers with large hailstones. In some places, there is a risk of extremely heavy thunderstorms.

Winds will be light to moderate from the north and northeast, with gusts reaching 15–17 m/s overnight. During the day, winds will shift from the northeast to the east, and during thunderstorms, local gusts may reach 25–27 m/s. Nighttime temperatures will drop to +13…+18°C, while daytime temperatures will rise to +23…+27°C, a few degrees cooler in coastal areas.

Over the weekend, precipitation is expected to decrease.

Rain is still expected in the northern part of the country on Saturday night, with the possibility of heavy thunderstorms in some places, but during the day rain is expected only in some eastern regions.

Forecasters also note that on Sunday, only light rain is expected in parts of the country during the afternoon. On Saturday night, fog may form in some areas, reducing visibility. Winds will remain light, but during thunderstorms early Saturday, gusts may reach up to 20 m/s. Nighttime temperatures will range from +11…+16°C, while daytime temperatures will rise to +18…+23°C. Sunday will be slightly warmer, with temperatures reaching +23…+26°C in many places.

Next week, the weather will remain similar – mostly cloudy skies, widespread rain, and the possibility of thunderstorms. Monday will feel summer-like, with temperatures reaching +26…+28°C in many areas. However, during the following days, temperatures will trend downward, and by midweek, the thermometer will not exceed +22°C.
