The Ministry of Finance (MoF) is preparing for a significant reduction in staff across its administrative sector next year, with the planned downsizing expected to exceed the 40 positions announced by the Ministry of Economics (MoE), Finance Minister Arvils Ašeradens (New Unity) said in an interview on TV3’s “900 Seconds” on Thursday.
“The MoF is also planning a serious reduction in its workforce,” Ašeradens stated, without disclosing the exact number, but emphasizing that it would be “substantially more” than the MoE’s proposed 40 job cuts.
More specific information will be announced during discussions on the upcoming national budget, the minister added.
Ašeradens also underlined that the reduction of personnel will not be limited to the MoF alone – it will be implemented across the entire public sector in 2025.
As previously reported,
sectoral ministries had until July to submit proposals aimed at reducing expenditures by 150 million euros.
On Monday, the 30th of June, Ašeradens informed Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity) that ministries had fulfilled the government’s mandate, submitting a total of 250 cost-cutting proposals. These proposals are intended to enhance public sector efficiency, reinforce fiscal resilience, and reduce administrative expenses.
According to the 2026 state budget development timeline, the Cabinet of Ministers is expected to receive the full report on expenditure cuts and reviews by the 19th of August.
