A majority of Saeima deputies today rejected the inclusion in the next Saeima session agenda of a declaration prepared by the party “Latvia First” regarding admitted mistakes and excesses in combating the spread of Covid-19, as well as its referral to the Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee for review.
The declaration expresses regret that government policies allegedly caused irreversible harm to people’s health, business activity, the development of children and youth, and eroded public trust in the state and its institutions.
It criticizes the practice of mandatory vaccination, unequal treatment of vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals, and restrictions that prevented people from gathering and protesting. The declaration also states that state officials misled the public and allowed a repressive attitude toward those with differing views.
The declaration calls on the state to acknowledge these mistakes, apologize to the public, and provide compensation for both material and moral damages.
It calls on the Cabinet of Ministers to submit draft legislation on compensation by September 1, 2025, and to ensure payouts by January 24, 2026. Additionally, it demands an evaluation of mechanisms for recovering state investments, particularly concerning airBaltic and the Ministry of Transport’s responsibility.
