Latvia considering e-voting – CEC: “It as a political decision”

The possibility for residents to cast their votes online in municipal and parliamentary elections is ultimately a political decision, said Kristīne Saulīte, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC), in a press briefing on Tuesday.

“It is a political decision whether we, as a country, take this path,” Saulīte stated, emphasizing that currently, Estonia is the only country implementing e-voting, with no other nation following suit

Speaking about the potential introduction of online voting, Saulīte highlighted that the main concerns in this discussion revolve around security risks and vulnerabilities.

Jorens Liopa, Director of the State Digital Development Agency, also weighed in on the debate, stating that the decision to allow online voting is a matter of choice. However, he assured that “internet voting is feasible.”

On Tuesday, the CEC held a press conference to provide updates on the upcoming municipal elections. The submission of candidate lists for the 2025 local elections will begin on the 19th of March.

Municipal elections are scheduled to take place in early June 2025.
