Birth rate decline in Latvia – newborn count below 1 000 for fourth consecutive month

In January 2025, a total of 881 newborns were registered in Latvia, marking a 16.1% decrease (169 fewer newborns) compared to the same period in 2024, according to provisional data published by the Central Statistical Bureau.

This means that for the fourth consecutive month, the number of registered newborns in Latvia has remained below 1 000, continuing the declining trend in births. In October 2024, 994 newborns were registered, followed by 940 in November and 921 in December.

Among the newborns registered in January 2025, 462 were boys—a 14.3% decrease (77 fewer) compared to January 2024—while 419 were girls, representing an 18% drop (92 fewer).

At the same time, 2 408 deaths were recorded in Latvia in January 2025, which is a 10.9% decrease (294 fewer deaths) compared to January of the previous year.

As a result, in January 2025, the number of deaths exceeded births by 1 527, whereas in the same period last year, this difference was even greater at 1 652.

Meanwhile, the number of registered marriages increased significantly. In January 2025, 466 marriages were recorded in Latvia, representing a 55.3% rise (166 more marriages) compared to the same month in 2024.
