New Unity to propose Mayor of Cēsis Jānis Rozenbergs to lead Latvia’s Ministry of Education

Political party New Unity plans to propose Mayor of Cēsis Jānis Rozenbergs for the post of Minister of Education and Science, as confirmed by Prime Minister Evika Siliņa in an interview to Latvijas Radio.

She said on Monday morning the proposal process for new minister is going quickly in Latvia. She expects the Saeima to decide on voting in ministers this week.

Siliņa stressed that residents should be provided with stability, considering the complicated geopolitical situation, especially in matters directly influenced by the government’s decisions. “The matter of government stability is highly important. It’s very important to continue working,” said Siliņa, adding that it is not possible to compose the coalition without New Unity.

A replacement of a single minister requires an agreement between parties within the coalition. “There was an agreement that changes should affect all members of the coalition,” said the politician,

stressing that every party will need to present appropriate candidates during this rotation. According to Siliņa, sometimes it is necessary to replace faces in politics. “Now is the good time to present a new vision to society,” added the Prime Minister.

She claimed that all ministers were aware of these changes before the decision was announced. “You can check the Cabinet of Ministers pass history. Everyone was told everything,” said the politician, commenting on the confusion over the logic of this decision voiced by certain ministers.

She is confident that neither the government itself nor she as Prime Minister should be replaced. A new government would mean a long political process, which, according to her, would not be in the interest of Latvian residents. “I have invested a great deal of effort into foundation of international relations,” said Siliņa.

She said there are no plans for a second “restart”.

Siliņa expects all partners, Progressives included, to offer new candidates for the vacant minister posts. “They have to be able to offer candidates. If they fail, we will see,” said the politician, stressing that it is necessary not to waste time on political demagoguery.

As previously reported, in an effort to “restart” her government, Siliņa has requested Minister of Transport Kaspars Briškens, Minister of Education and Science Anda Čakša and Minister of Welfare Uldis Augulis to step down.

Latvian PM has asked coalition partners to delegate new ministers.
