From rain to snow – what weather can we expect in Latvia this weekend?

On Friday, the 31st of January, the sky in Latvia will be cloudy. It will rain in most of Latvia every now and then. Rainfall will be lengthy in central regions. The wind will be slow to moderate and will blow from the south and south-west. Around afternoon in Kurzeme, the wind will change direction and will blow from the west. Air temperature at night will stay at +2° C… +5° C. Daytime air temperature will be higher: +3° C… +7° C, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Weather will remain largely cloudy on the weekend. Precipitation zones will pass through the country’s territory, bringing rain and wet snow. The wind will blow from the north-west and west, reaching a speed of 15 m/sec on Saturday. From Saturday onward, eastern territories will see snowfall. The layer of snow may reach reach 2-4 cm.

Meteorologists say that visibility will be poor during foggy hours and roads will be slippery, so motorists are urged to be cautious.

Colder masses of air will flow to the country. This way, although air temperature will remain mostly positive, it will gradually become colder. Air temperature on Saturday night may drop to 0° C… +3° C. Sunday will be slightly colder, as air temperature at night and during the day will drop to -2° C… +2° C.

The beginning of next week will be tangibly colder. Air temperature in most of Latvia will drop below 0° C. Monday will remain cloudy with moments of precipitation. The intensity of precipitation will go down, the sky will clear up, and the sun will shine. In the middle of the week, weather will be mostly dry and cold. Air temperature at night will drop below 0° C in nearly all of Latvia (as far as -5° C in eastern parts of the country).
