More snow and low temperatures expected in Latvia this weekend

Precipitation is expected in Latvia on Friday, the 10th of January. This means snow and wet snow. Freezing rain is expected in eastern parts of Latvia in the morning, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

The layer of snow in many parts of Kurzeme will increase by another 5-7 cm over the course of the day, reaching more than 10 cm at night.

Meteorologists remind that motorists and pedestrians should be especially careful under such weather conditions – roads will be slippery and visibility will suffer during intense precipitation events! Certain roads in Kurzeme may become difficult to navigate. The wind will blow from the east in most of the country and from the north along the coast. Strong gusts of wind are expected in Kurzeme. Air temperature will stay at 0° C… +3° C in Latvia.

The sky will remain cloudy on Saturday. Clouds will disperse at times along the coast. Precipitation will continue in many parts of the country – mainly snow and wet snow.

Roads will become slippery in some areas and visibility will be poor during precipitation events. Air temperature will rise slightly above 0° C in most of the country. In eastern parts of the country air temperature will drop to -1° C at night.

Sunday will be mostly cloudy, but in the afternoon, the sky will gradually clear up, starting from the north-west. It is expected to snow in most of the country. In some areas the layer of snow will increase by 1-4 cm. Air temperature at night and during the day will stay at 0° C… -4° C.

Weather conditions will be similar at the beginning of next week – cloudy weather with moments of clear sky. Precipitation is expected – mainly snow and rain. Wind speed will go up, reaching a speed of 15-16 m/sec (19 m/sec along the coast). Colder masses of air will flow to the country on the night to Monday, causing air temperature to drop to -8° C… -12° C. Air temperature will go up again in the middle of the week. After that, air temperature at night will drop slightly below 0° C.
