Latvian Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns is unsure if he wants to run for a repeated term in this post.
According to LETA, the Council for the Judiciary announced a personnel selection process for the post of the prosecutor general at the beginning of 2025. Stukāns said on the Latvian Radio programme “Krustpunktā” on Thursday that as soon as application submission is announced, he will announce his decision on whether or not to run. “I thought about it, I thought about it at the end of the year. My considerations are on both sides,” Stukāns stressed.
Looking back at the time spent in high office, Stukāns believes that regarding the activities of the prosecutor’s office “we have completed all the functions”. Speaking about his personal cases, Stukāns admitted that there have been “various awkward or unfortunate cases”. Stukāns did not want to talk to specific episodes, but confirmed that one of them was the case of Leons Rusiņš, who brutally murdered his ex-wife in Jekabpils.
Stukāns said he is happy that during his term of office there was no decision from any court of law about any poorly performed duties or improper actions from the prosecutor. At the same time, there is always an opportunity to improve and develop, and this is the direction in which work must be done in the future, he said.
Juris Stukāns was unanimously approved by the Saeima as Latvia’s Prosecutor General on the 18th of June 2020.
