Multiple precipitation zones to pass through Latvia; wind to be strong

Multiple cyclones will pass through Latvia this week – the wind will be strong, reaching a speed of up to 25 m/sec along the coast in the morning on Monday, the 16th of December. Orange level warning is in place because of very strong wind.

Warmer masses of air will flow to the country, causing air temperature to become positive in many parts of the country. No new layer of snow will form. The snow in eastern parts of the country will melt, as reported by Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

The sky will be cloudy in the first half of the week. It will clear up every now and then. A precipitation zone will pass into Latvia from the west at night, bringing rain, wet snow for most of the country and snow and wet snow for eastern parts of the country. It is possible the layer of snow in eastern parts of Latvia will increase by 2-4 cm. Nevertheless, snow will become rain during the day in most of Latvia.

Motorists are advised to be cautious, as roads will become slippery and visibility will suffer during snowing!

Precipitation will be intensive in the coming days as well. Rain, wet snow and snow will fall as well. Roads will be slippery! The wind will blow from the west, north-west and will remain strong, reaching a speed of 15-19 m/sec on Tuesday (20-23 m/sec along the coast)! On the night to Wednesday and the afternoon, wind speed along the coast will remain at 15-18 m/sec! Air temperature will remain positive even though it will drop to 0° C… -5° C in eastern parts of the country on Wednesday.

Weather will remain similar in the second half of the week – precipitation in many parts of the country. Rain will be the dominant type of precipitation in Latvia. It is likely Christmas will not be white in most of the country. Air temperature will remain mostly unchanged as well. The wind will remain strong.
