Diseases caused by mycoplasma bacteria on a rise in Latvia

A significant increase in the demand for laboratory tests for the diagnosis of infections caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae has been observed in Latvia. While about 500 examinations were carried out in September at the “Central Laboratory”, the number exceeded 2 000 in November, and more than 1 300 examinations have been carried out so far in December. The observed trend indicates an increase in the prevalence of infections and emphasizes the need for accurate and operative diagnostics to effectively prevent its complications, according to the Central Laboratory.

Mycoplasma species are numerous, but the disease is most often caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, which causes infections of the upper or lower respiratory tract. Symptoms of the disease may initially be similar to a cold or mild bronchitis – sore throat, cough, mild fever. However, if the disease is not diagnosed and treated in time, it can develop into more severe forms, such as pneumonia. Mycoplasma-induced respiratory infections are particularly dangerous for patients at risk, including children, the elderly, and persons with chronic respiratory or immune system diseases.

Andra Cīrule, Chief Medical Officer of Riga East Clinical University Hospital “Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Centre” points out: “The prevalence of diseases caused by Mycoplasma bacteria has increased significantly this season compared to previous years. This is observed in hospitals – every day patients with mycoplasma pneumonia are admitted to the hospital. This year, more of them are the youngest people. Such local outbreaks usually recur every few years People get sick, get antibodies and immunity for a while, but when this immunity goes down, the next wave of infections observed.”

Specialists urge the public to stay alert for symptoms of respiratory diseases,

such as prolonged coughing, difficulty with breathing, or fatigue, especially in the season when the prevalence of various respiratory infections typically goes up.

If symptoms persist for more than a few days or progress, it is important to consult a general practitioner or medical specialist, as well as perform the necessary examinations, including lung x-rays, laboratory tests and make determine an accurate diagnosis.

Jeļena Storoženko, Associate Professor of the Department of Infection at RSU, member of the board of the Central Laboratory, emphasizes: “The availability of examinations is an important step for public health, as it allows to quickly and accurately identify the causative agents of infections. Laboratories in Latvia offer modern testing tools. Laboratory tests are important because they allow you to start targeted treatment and prevent the spread of infection in the community. However, for this accessibility to be effective, public education is also important. Many people still underestimate the potential danger of infections, often ignoring symptoms or leaving them untreated until the situation becomes serious. Mycoplasma-induced respiratory infections can also be diagnosed at a laboratory using a variety of diagnostic methods.

Mycoplasmosis, caused by the microorganism Mycoplasma pneumoniae, is caused by airborne droplets, and prevention plays an important role in the prevention of diseases. To reduce the spread of mycoplasma infection, it is recommended to observe respiratory hygiene – regularly wash hands, avoid close contact with sick people, and keep rooms ventilated. Various mycoplasma diagnostic tests are currently available in medical laboratories in Latvia.
