The number of newborns registered in a single month in Latvia this October dropped below 1 000 for the first time, according to provisional data from the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSP).
994 newborns were registered in Latvia in October 2024, which is 15.8% or 186 less when compared to the same months of 2023. 489 boys and 505 girls were registered in October.
CSP data shows that of the ten months with the lowest birth rates in Latvia, seven are from 2024.
The smallest number of newborns was registered in October this year – 994, followed by February 2024, when 1 029 newborns were registered; June 2024 with 1 035 newborns; January 2024 with 1 050 newborns; April 2024 with 1 061 newborns; February 2023 with 1 063 newborns; March 2024 with 1 075 newborns; November 2022 with 1 077 newborns; November 2023 with 1 079 newborns and May 2024 with 1 094 newborns.
At the same time, according to the data of the Statistical Bureau of Latvia, the largest number of births during the month in Latvia was registered in June 1922 – 4 204, followed by February 1987 with 4 091 newborns, March 1923 with 4 068 newborns, January 1924 with 4 065 newborns and March 1927 with 3 968 newborns.
A total of 10 710 newborns were registered in Latvia during the ten months of this year, which is 13% or 1 605 newborns less than in the respective period of 2023. Of which, in ten months of 2024, among the registered newborns, 5 481 were boys, which is 12.8% or 806 less than in the corresponding period of 2023, but 5 229 were girls, which is a decrease of 13.3% or 799.
The data also show that in ten months of this year 21 871 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is 4.5% or 1 040 less than in the ten months of 2023, when 22 911 deaths were registered.
Thus, the number of deaths registered in ten months of this year exceeded the number of births by 11 161, while in the corresponding period of the previous year the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 10 596.
In the ten months of 2024, a total of 9 151 marriages were registered in Latvia, which, compared to the corresponding period of 2023, is 4.1% or 396 marriages less.
The provisional population number in Latvia was 1.855 million on the 1st of November 2024.
