Snow, wind and icy roads: cyclone to continue affecting Latvia

A cyclone will continue to determine the country’s weather on Thursday, but rainfall will not be as heavy as in the first half of the week. It will be cloudy, with only brief clearing of the sky in some areas, according to the Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology.

For the rest of the day, precipitation is expected in the form of rain, which will gradually turn to sleet and snow. In some parts of Kurzeme and Vidzeme, 2-4cm of snow will form. In some areas, visibility will be impaired, and roads will be icy, so the synoptics urge everyone to take extra care!

Moderate to moderately strong westerly, south-westerly winds at night gusting to 15-19m/s in Kurzeme and Vidzeme and up to 20m/s on the coast, with gusty winds only in coastal areas during the day. At night, the minimum air temperature will be -2…+3 degrees, while during the day it will warm up to +1…+4 degrees.

On Friday and over the weekend, the cyclone’s influence will weaken to some extent, but precipitation, mainly sleet, snow, will still be expected over most of the country. A 2-4cm thick snow cover will form in many places, but on Friday the snow layer will increase by 5-6cm in parts of Vidzeme.

The Latvian Centre for Environment, Geology and Meteorology points out that roads will be icy in some parts and visibility will be impaired during snowfall! Winds will gradually ease and be slow to moderate, gusting up to 15-17m/s on Friday along the coast and in the east, with gusty winds only along the coast on Saturday. A cooler air mass will flow into Latvia, making the weather cooler – temperatures will cool to 0…-5 degrees during the dark hours in many parts, but will not warm up more than +3…+5 degrees during the day.

Current forecasts indicate that a large active cyclone will approach country again on Sunday, bringing with it not only a new area of precipitation, but also gusty winds.
