Orange warning: wind speed may reach 30 m/sec in Latvia

Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has announced Orange Level Warning in coastal regions, Riga included, for the evening on Friday, the 1st of November, and the night to Saturday, the 2nd of November.

According to meteorologists, wind speed may reach 25-30 m/sec. The meteorology centre warns the wind will likely break tree branches and topple trees. The wind will also carry various objects in the air, causing danger for private and public property, as well as human health. The wind may also cause damage to infrastructure and obstruct roads. Sea waves may put at risk coastal infrastructure and flood low coastal areas.

Damage from the storm is estimated to be the most severe in Riga and coastal parts of Vidzeme.

A Yellow Level Warning will remain in place until Saturday afternoon, as wind speed may reach 18-23 m/sec.

The amount of clouds in the sky will be volatile in the coming days. Some short-term precipitation is expected. In some parts – mainly the middle parts of the country – residents can expect hard rain, hail and even wet snow. There is also a possibility of a thunderstorm. Roads may become slippery.

Minimal air temperature at night will drop to 0° C… +4° C (+6° C along the coast). Daytime air temperature will reach only +2° C… +7° C.

Wind speed in Riga may reach 25-30 m/sec. Wind speed will start going down around the afternoon on Saturday. It will rain from time to time. Hail, wet snow and thunderstorm remain a possibility as well. Daytime air temperature at night and during the day will stay within +3° C… +6° C.
