At the 25th of September meeting of Russia’s Security Council, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposes amending the country’s nuclear doctrine.
Putin claimed at the meeting that it is necessary to take into account “new military threats” for Russia and its allies and it is necessary to clarify the conditions for the use of nuclear arms.
Putin said that nuclear superpowers that support another country’s attack on Russia is to be considered an aggressor. He did not clearly say if the new redaction of the document should provide the use of nuclear arms in such a case.
This could apply to Ukraine, whose fight against Russia’s aggression is supported by US and other western nuclear powers.
Putin also said that use of nuclear arms will be considered if information is received about “a massive launch of air and space attack arms”.
The head of the Kremlin clarified that this applies to strategic and tactical aircraft, cruise missiles, drones and other aircraft.
He also said that the doctrine on reserve rights to use nuclear arms in the event of aggression against Russia and Belarus will be changed.
This will apply to cases when some country poses “critical threats for Russia’s sovereignty” using conventional arms.
Putin also said nuclear arms are “the most important security guarantee for the state and its residents”.
