Starting with the next school year national defence training will be a compulsory lesson in secondary education institutions, as provided by amendments to the general secondary education standard passed by the Latvian government on Tuesday, the 16th of April.
National defence training will be one of the main courses in the health, safety and physical activity training. The course will be taught eight academic hours one day a month for two consecutive school years. A total of 112 academic hours are planned for the entire course.
Schools will be able to choose on their own if they want to implement this new course in addition to existing academic workload or at the expense of other subjects. If pupils’ academic accomplishments suffer as a result of increased workload, principals will be able to change the number of lessons in this course.
The Ministry of Education and Science explains that this option was selected because each education institution has different education plans with a different number of lessons depending on whether or not they pick the in-depth course.
Implementation of the national defence training will take place according to the curriculum developed by the Junior Guard’s developed teaching performance. The teaching will be implemented by instructors of junior guards.
In 2018, the Saeima ruled that as of the 1st of September 2024 national defence training will be adopted in all education institutions that provide general and vocational secondary education as a mandatory subject.
