Last week, there was a drop in flu and Covid-19 infections in Latvia, according to data compiled by the Disease Prevention and Control Centre (SPKC).
Family doctors involved in monitoring efforts reported receiving 651 patients with symptoms of acute upper respiratory infections. 77 of them were diagnosed with flu.
Flu infection cases were found in Ventspils, Riga, Rezekne, Liepaja, Daugavpils and Valmiera counties. Infection rates were the highest in the five to 14 years age group last week.
SPKC reports that flu activity in many EU and Eurozone countries is either going down or has already stabilised. The average percentage of positive flu tests in EU/Eurozone remains at 10%.
The number of Covid-19 infection cases continues going down in Latvia as well. Last week, there were 20 infection cases (19 a week prior). A total of 577 laboratory tests were performed (573 a week prior) for SARS-CoV-2 virus. 18 Covid-19 patients were hospitalised (20 a week prior and 17 two weeks prior).
SPKC notes that there are no hospitalised patients suffering from severe Covid-19 infection. Nevertheless, there were three deaths of Covid-19 patients last week (one a week prior).
SPKC reminds that the most effective way to prevent a severe infection with flu or Covid-19 is vaccination.
