Authorities visit homes of 55 Russian citizens who do not have legal status in Latvia

Last Friday, Latvian State Border Guard visited homes of 55 Russian citizens who, as of the 3rd of November 2023, do not have a legal status in Latvia, as confirmed by State Border Guard.
The week was spent by the border authority in high alert. The main security directions included maintaining immigration control within the country and checking the rights of Russian citizens to stay in Latvia. The latter included checking entrants to the country with an emphasis on Russian citizens crossing the border. The situation also remained intense on the Latvian-Belarusian border, where a large number of people were deterred from illegally crossing the border.
In total, Latvian law enforcement authorities checked 55 possible place of residence of Russian citizens. Three violations were found and three administrative violation procedures were initiated. Latvian border guards also confiscated three expired permanent residence permits.
In locations in which the persons in question were supposed to be but weren’t, Latvian authorities interviewed neighbours and left notifications, reminding the owners that they are required to contact Latvian State Border Guard about their continued stay in the country.
On the 17th of March the State Border Guard and State Police performed checks of documents of Russian citizens participating in Russian presidential elections outside the Russian embassy. A total of 1 001 Russian citizens were checked. 24 of them had expired permanent residence permits. Three administrative procedures were commenced.
At the end of the week, Latvian State Border Guard remained on high alert patrolling the border. Russian citizens crossing the border were in focus the whole time. A total of 183 Russian citizens crossed the Russian-Latvian border through Terehova and Grebneva border checkpoints.
Entry to the country was denied to 11 Russian citizens. There wasn’t a single case when a Russian citizen left for Russia on the 17th of March and were denied entry back to Latvia.
