On the 14th of March the Latvian Saeima passed amendments to the Health Care Financing Law, postponing adoption of a “two-basket” healthcare system in the country.
Amendments were proposed by the Saeima Social and Employment Matters Committee. Following an invitation from the committee, the proposal to postpone the adoption of the aforementioned system was submitted to the committee by Minister of Health Hosams Abu Meri.
It was the 12th Saeima supported the principle in accordance with which the population would have access to a wider range of health care services depending on the social contributions made.
Adoption of this system was postponed multiple times.
Amendments passed to day dictate the postponing of the two so-called healthcare service basket system until the end of 2025. By then politicians hope to have developed a new healthcare financing system.
The amendments proposed by the committee and the minister also require the Cabinet of Ministers to the prepare a draft law on the procedure for financing state-funded health care services by the 1st of March 2025.
The law also states that that from the 1st of January, 2025, onward persons suffering from alcohol, narcotic, psychotropic or toxic substance addiction will be exempted from co-payments of patients for receiving narcotic assistance.
