Due to power disruptions on Riga-Tukums line in the morning on Thursday, the 7th of March, two trains were cancelled and several more were delayed. As BNN was told by Vivi Communication and Marketing Office lead Edgars Butāns, this situation, as well as the matter with power supply are being resolved in cooperation with Latvian Railway.
“The reason behind this morning’s delays and cancellations is not related to the reliability of rolling stock, rather problems with railway infrastructure. There were power supply disruptions,” said Rodžers Jānis Grigulis, who has just recently announced his decision to step down as chairman of the board of Pasažieru vilciens. Edgars Butāns, on the other hand, stresses that problems are being surveyed – what they are and where they appear. “LDz is responsible for maintaining the infrastructure, we only drive around with our trains,” said the Vivi representative.
When asked how much the state of railway infrastructure affects passenger transports, Butāns said passenger train trips are directly subordinated to the type of infrastructure improvement work on the railway sections in question.
“This was one of the reasons why we were cautious in deploying new trains on the railway lines on which infrastructure maintenance work are happening more and more often.
We take these situations into account, as well as the state of infrastructure. We reorganise traffic intensity and frequency accordingly.”
Vivi previously explained that technical problems can happen for trains and infrastructure.
“If we’re talking about infrastructure problems, then there are traffic light problems (problems with the system), malfunctioning switches, lower permitted speed limit due to railway or connecting railway line repairs. Train malfunctions mean problems with overall train functionality, which means trains have to be delayed or cancelled until the problem is fixed,” the company notes.
