Mayor of Riga to look for ways to terminate city council member involved in corruption scandal

Riga City Council plans to suspend acting director of the Department of Spatial Planning and Mobility Jānis Vaivods for three months. This time will be used to look for a legally correct way to terminate working relations with him, said Mayor of Riga Vilnis Ķirsis in an interview to TV3.
From there the city council plans to announce an open personnel selection procedure to select a new director for this department. It is also planned to perform rotations within the department itself.
Ķirsis says he sees no responsibility of his own for Vaivods’ possible illegalities, because he “cannot dive into every employee’s head”.
As previously reported, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) is checking information about the director of the Department of Spatial Planning and Mobility of Riga City Council possibly making a bribe offer to another state official in exchange for a favourable decision for party offering the bribe.

The size of the bribe in question is at least EUR 50 000. Two people involved in the criminal procedure have the right to defence.
