25 vehicles that were previously registered in Russia were re-registered with the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) Vehicles and Owners Register in two months of 2024, as reported by CSDD representatives.
The company notes that the re-registration of Russian vehicles in Latvia was permitted until Wednesday, the 14th of February. As of Thursday, however, this option is no longer available.
This means that between mid-November 2023, when amendments to the Road Traffic Law came into force, and Wednesday, the 14th of February, a total of 46 vehicles were re-registered in Latvia.
LETA previously reported that in the middle of November 2023 the Saeima passed in the final reading amendments to the Road Traffic Law, prohibiting vehicles registered in Russia to remain in Latvia. Amendments came into force on the 15th of November 2023.
The law states that owners of vehicles registered in Russia were obligated to re-register their vehicles or take them from Latvia by the 14th of February 2024. At the same time, however, use of vehicles registered in Russia are still allowed to participate in road traffic in Latvia if they are crossing the country in transit. A vehicle registered in Russia is allowed to cross Latvia’s territory in transit only once.
If a vehicle is not registered in Latvia or does not leave the country and is found participating in in road traffic, this vehicle will be confiscated. Confiscated vehicles will then be handed to Ukraine.
