Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa promises to discuss with the head of the State Chancellery new information that has recently come to light about former prime minister, current Minister of Foreign Affairs Krišjānis Kariņš’s private flights.
If need be, she promises to initiate investigations as well.
In her interview to LTV programme Rīta panorāma, commenting on the information that it was Latvia’s, not the European budget, that paid tens of thousands of euros for Kariņš’s private flights, Siliņa said it is important for information like that to be presented and reflected correctly.
It is clear that different interpretations could have various flaws in the reflection of data, and if there were various mistakes made, they can always be corrected by explaining the cause, said Siliņa. At the same time, she said she is committed to discussing this situation with the head of the State Chancellery and initiating an investigation if there are suspicions that something wasn’t done correctly.
“Human error is human error, but if there is something is wrong with this information and data, we will need to initiate an investigation,” said the prime minister.
LTV programme “Kas notiek Latvijā?” [What’s going on in Latvia?] reported this week that although it was previously reported that Kariņš’s private flights to meetings of the Council of Europe were paid for from the EU Council budget, a portion of costs were still covered by Latvia’s state budget.
As it is known, information regarding the private flights used by Krišjānis Kariņš’s delegations and their costs previously received a great deal of criticism from Latvian residents. According to newly-surfaced information, between 2021 and 2023 Latvia’s state budget paid EUR 613 830 on Kariņš’s flights. Together with the costs covered by the EU, expenses of these flights reach EUR 1.36 million.
