Stende meteorological observation station in Talsi county reports that on Thursday, the 8th of February, the thickness of the layer of snow between 05:00 and 08:00 grew from 2 cm to 16 cm, according to Latvian State Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.
Heavy snowfall was observed in northern and central parts of Kurzeme. The thickness of the layer of snow in Ventspils port area went up from 5 cm to 11 cm.
Heavy snowfall was also observed in Jurmala and Riga this morning. Snow clouds continue moving east.
The thickness of the layer of snow went up differently in different regions: from 2 cm in Ainaži and Rūjiena to 22 cm in Madona and 24 cm in Alūksne. Dagda meteorological observation station reports 33 cm of snow.
LVĢMC meteorological stations measure the layer of snow using ultrasound sensors placed in specially prepared locations.
Meteorologists have announced a yellow-level warning in most of Latvia, Riga included, because of the heavy snowfall. Visibility is also poor during intense snowfall, complicating driving conditions.
