Lasting road traffic changes announced for Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment in Riga

From the 5th of February onward there will be lasting road traffic changes implemented on the Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment. These changes are related to the construction of Rail Baltica railway bridge over Daugava River.
In November 2023 Riga municipality’s construction work concluded. Now construction work will be continued by Rail Baltica’s general partnership BERERIX.
Within the construction site located on Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment near the Railway Bridge it is planned to impose general road traffic changes. These changes mean limiting vehicle road traffic on the left lane of the road in both directions.

Motorists also have to keep in mind that during active construction work, the road may be closed down entirely at night or there could be more closures of certain driving lanes, Riga municipality reports.

In time it is possible there could be traffic changes imposed for pedestrians as well. The municipality notes that considerable changes on Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment will remain for a long time. Residents and guests to the capital city are invited to plan their routes in advance and keep in mind existing and possible road traffic restrictions.
Riga City Council’s Transport Affairs Committee head Olafs Pulks notes: “The municipality has reached an agreement with both the client European Railway Lines and the hired construction company that two lanes on Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment are to remain available all the time. Yes, there will be short periods of time when road traffic will be organised in a single-lane manner. However, we have made it clear that construction work needs to be organised in a way to prevent any major traffic problems. The municipality will carefully follow the situation to ensure the contracted company fulfils its promises, work progresses within set terms, as well to ensure municipal infrastructure is no accidentally damaged during construction work.”
In November 2023 construction work concluded within areas close to Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment, Riga Central Bus Station, Central Market and Central Railway Station. This was preparation for efforts to integrate Rail Baltica into the city centre’s infrastructure. According to the planned schedule, it was planned to adopt new road traffic restrictions on Ģenerāļa Radziņa Embankment in order to free up space for Rail Baltica project’s expansion in Riga Central Railway Station. The project provides for building a bridge that will start on Maskavas Street and will end on Mūkusalas Street, crossing Daugava River, Zaķusala and Maza Daugava. The new bridge will provide not only railway traffic but also allow for pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
