Registered unemployment level in Latvia at 5.7% in 2023

At the end of December 2023 the registered unemployment level in Latvia was 5.7% of the economically active population, which is also 0.3 percentage points more when compared to the end of November and 0.4 percentage points lower than at the end of 2022, according to information published by the State Employment Agency (NVA).
At the end of December there where 50 344 unemployed people registered with NVA, which is 2 160 more than a month prior, when there were 48 184 unemployed people registered with the agency, and 3 192 less when compared to the end of 2022 (53 536).
The lowest unemployment level at the end of 2023 was registered in Riga region -4.3% of economically active population, which is 0.1 percentage points more than a month prior, and the highest registered unemployment level remained in Latgale region – 11%, which is 0.2 percentage points more than a month prior.

The most rapid rise of registered unemployment between regions was observed in Kurzeme –

by 0.7 percentage points, reaching 6.2% of the economically active population by the end of the month.
At the same time, the registered unemployment level in Vidzeme was 5.9% of the economically active population at the end of December, which is 0.3 percentage points more than a month prior. In Zemgale it was 5.5%, which is a growth of 0.4 percentage points when compared to the end of November.
In Riga the registered unemployment level did not change in December and was 4.2% of the economically active population at the end of the month.
Compared to the end of 2022, the registered unemployment level in all of Latvia’s regions has gone down.
In Riga and Riga region the registered unemployment level went down by 0.1 percentage point. In Kurzeme it went down by 0.3 percentage points, in Vidzeme and Zemgale it went down by 0.6 percentage points, and in Latgale it went down by 1.8 percentage points.
At the end of 2022 the registered unemployment level in Latvia was at 6.1% of the economically active population.
