Partnership institute issue in Latvia remains a controversial topic for Latvian residents

Over the course of almost four weeks Latvian residents have provided only 14.65% of the necessary signatures to initiate a referendum the repeal of amendments to the Partnership Institute Law.
As reported by the Central Election Commission’s representative Andrejs Vaivars, between the 7th of December and the 2nd of January a total of 22 602 voters signed the proposed amendments to the Notariate Law.
In order to initiate a referendum, it is necessary to secure signatures of one-tenth of the population or 154 241 voters.
As previously reported, on the 9th of November 2023 the majority of Saeima deputies passed in the final reading the legislative draft proposed by Minister of the Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere. This legislative draft provides for the adoption of a new institute of law – partnership, which is a way for same-sex couples to legalise their relationships.
Shortly after that, political parties – Combined List, Latvia in First Place and National Alliance – announced having collected signatures from 34 Saeima deputies to attempt to initiate a referendum to repeal amendments to the Notariate Law.
Political party For Stability later joined the three other parties in support of the referendum plans.
