During the mass air attack of Ukraine on Tuesday, the 2nd of January, Russia accidentally bombed a village in Voronezh Oblast in Russia, not far from the Ukrainian border, as reported by Russian officials, adding that no one was injured in the incident.
During the flight of Russia air and space forces at 09:00 (Moscow time) on Tuesday, “an accidental release of aviation munition took place above Petropavlovka village in Voronezh Oblast”, as Russian news agencies cite the statement from the army.
Petropavlovka is located 150 km away from the Ukrainian border.
Russian Ministry of Defence admitted that six private houses were damaged in the incident involving a dropped Kh-101 missile.
An investigation is underway. “A committee is working at the site to determine the extent of the damage and assist with restoration of those houses,” the ministry reports.
The governor of Voronezh Oblast Aleksandr Gusev reported that multiple residents of Petropavlovka will be provided with temporary living conditions.
He also said there were no injuries, and that “damage was caused to seven households”.
Last year the Russian army admitted that one of its combat aircraft accidentally dropped a bomb above Belgorod, which is close to the Ukrainian border, causing an explosion.
On the night to Tuesday, the 2nd of January, Russia fired 99 missiles, 72 of which were apparently shot down by Ukrainian anti-air defences. According to the Commander of Ukrainian Armed Forces Valery Zaluzhny, all ten hyper-sonic Kinzhal missiles, 59 out of 70 Kh-101, Kh-555 and Kh-55 cruise missiles, as well as all three Kalibr cruise missiles were shot down.
At least four people in Kyiv and Kharkiv were killed, and several dozen were injured.
